South of Lake Manyara, Tarangire National Park is a top spot in Africa for viewing elephants. The 1,005-square-mile preserve has a large pachyderm population, and it is not uncommon to spy herds of 300 or more bull elephants roving the land. Other park highlights include the many baobab trees, such as the majestic Poacher’s Baobab, which has a diameter of more than 30 feet and is thought to be more than 3,000 years old.

Many of the park’s animals are tree-climbing creatures, including leopards, lions and pythons. Other wildlife that can be seen at Tarangire are gazelles, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, impalas, wildebeests and more than 550 bird species.
